Pacific Grove is a tale of two nines. H. Chandler Egan laid out the front through the town's forested inland ground in 1932; in 1960 Jack Neville—co-designer of Pebble Beach Golf Links—added a back nine over true links dunesland beside the Point Pinos lighthouse, where the course opens to the sea.
It's a municipal course, walkable and a fraction of resort prices, which is exactly why locals call it the poor man's Pebble.
