The National opened in 1997 as a Tom Fazio design and grew to 27 holes—the Ridge, Bluff and Cove nines. In 2024 it was reconfigured: the Bluff nine was folded into Fazio's new Richland course, and The National now plays 18 holes across the Ridge and Cove nines.
It measures 6,987 yards from the tips, but the length undersells it—Fazio worked the natural elevation into nearly every hole, and shots played uphill and down keep changing club selection. Dense hardwoods and strategic bunkering reward accurate driving.
