Some golf trips are about a resort; this one is about a single, perfect course. Pasatiempo is Alister MacKenzie's public masterpiece—the layout the architect of Augusta National and Cypress Point called his finest, and the one he lived beside until his death in 1934. It sits in the hills above Santa Cruz, tumbling toward Monterey Bay across rolling ground split by dramatic barrancas.
A 2023–24 restoration by Jim Urbina returned every green and bunker to MacKenzie's 1929 design, so it's playing better than it has in generations. It's semi-private, but public tee times open on a rolling two-to-three-week window—book ahead. Santa Cruz itself is the off-course reward: the beach boardwalk, redwoods a few minutes inland, and a laid-back surf town for dinner.
