Pete Dye built Harbour Town in 1969 with a young Jack Nicklaus consulting, and the pair deliberately rejected the muscular, target-golf orthodoxy of the era. The fairways thread through live oaks and lagoons, the greens are among the smallest on the PGA Tour, and length counts for far less than the nerve to shape a ball into a specific quarter of a putting surface. It is a course that rewards the shotmaker and quietly humiliates the bomber—which is exactly why the pros keep coming back.

Since 1969 it has hosted the RBC Heritage the week after the Masters, and its plaid-jacket tradition is one of the Tour's most beloved. Visitors play the same holes Palmer, Player and Stewart won on, working through a stretch of demanding par 4s before the walk everyone remembers—out of the trees and into the open wind off the Sound. The card reads short at a shade over 7,000 yards, but nobody leaves calling it easy.

The Lighthouse Finish

The closing par 4 breaks from the shelter of the trees and runs straight along Calibogue Sound, the red-and-white Harbour Town Lighthouse rising behind the green. The tee shot must flirt with the marsh down the left, and the long approach is thrown into whatever the wind off the water is doing that afternoon. It is one of golf's most photographed finishes and, in a breeze, one of its most nerve-testing.
