The Grand Golf Club is the private Tom Fazio course attached to the Fairmont Grand Del Mar, threaded through Los Peñasquitos Canyon in the hills between Del Mar and Carmel Valley. Opened in 1999, it's San Diego's only Fazio design—a par-72 parkland routing of about 7,130 yards from the Grand tees, with dramatic elevation change, deep and varied bunkering, and fairways kept improbably green against the canyon scrub.
It's a members-and-resort-guests club: stay at the Grand Del Mar and you can book a tee time, cart and traditional forecaddie included. The round closes over a stream to a waterfall backdrop at the 18th, and the 50,000-square-foot practice range ranks among the best warm-up grounds in the county.
The par-4 closer plays over a stream to a green set against a waterfall, the Grand Del Mar's Mediterranean-revival clubhouse rising behind—the resort's own pick for the course's signature moment.
