Torrey Pines sits on cliffs above La Jolla, a genuine municipal golf course that happens to have hosted the U.S. Open twice—most famously in 2008, when Tiger Woods beat Rocco Mediate in a 19-hole Monday playoff on one leg. The South course is the championship test; a North course shares the property but isn't in our catalog.

This is a golf round inside a bigger San Diego trip more than a standalone golf destination—La Jolla Cove, Balboa Park, the Gaslamp Quarter, and the San Diego Zoo are all a short drive away, so it's an easy add to a longer California trip.

Fifteen minutes inland, the Fairmont Grand Del Mar hides San Diego's only Tom Fazio course, The Grand Golf Club, in Los Peñasquitos Canyon—private, but open to resort guests.
